7 Mistakes Every Woman Should Avoid When Advocating For Herself

March 20, 2018

Women are fierce and will go to bat for those they care about. Think of your closest girlfriends they'll get up in the middle of the night to come to your aid. However, when it comes to advocating for herself she needs encouragement to ask for what she wants.

Here are the 7 common mistakes every woman should avoid when advocating for herself.

Feelings over Facts

Stick to the facts in every situation no matter what is at stake or how person it can seem.

Fear

Fear can hold the strongest people back from speaking up. Think back to a time when you were afraid to do something. What was the result? Afterwards was it as bad as you thought it would be? Whenever we grow it forces us to step outside of our comfort zone. Don't allow fear to hold you back.

Giving up too soon

No, does not mean give up, it's a signal to get more creative. When faced with what seems like an impossible task think of the man who was 3 feet from gold.

Desire be liked

I've coached dozens of women who hold back on asking for more responsibility at work because she wants to be liked. While likeability matters so does respect. By advocating for yourself you teach people to respect you for the professional that you are.

Unclear of what she wants

We've all heard of the importance of goal setting and setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals it's not just a cliche' when you know what you want you can clearly ask for what you want and need to be successful in all aspects of life. Spend time in deep thought to create S.M.A.R.T. Goals and revisit them regularly.

Failure to Prepare

Success is when preparation meets opportunity. If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready. You've probably heard those phrases before but it's so true. While you're waiting for the moment to shine spend your spare time preparing to reach your goals. You may need outside resources to in order to achieve certain goals but ultimately you have to do the work. Do the work now!

Perfection

There have been studies that show women will wait until they have all qualifications boxes checked before they apply for a job whereas there male counterparts will apply with less than half the same qualifications. Don't left perfection stop you from taking action and moving forward.
